Top tips to actually enjoy exercise

Exercising is very much like Marmite. You either love it or your hate it. It is, however, a necessity if you want to stay fit and healthy, but it can be difficult to enjoy. Whether you are in a gym or if you prefer cycling or working out outdoors, you will need some motivation at some point. Below are some top tips to help you to actually enjoy your exercise.

Make it a habit

We all know that one person who goes to the gym on a daily basis, or who buys bike parts online for their bicycles monthly to keep up with their races. The reason they are so successful with exercising is because they make it a habit.

If you make exercise a habit and part of your daily routine, you will be more likely to keep going. Try not to make yourself feel bad for skipping a day of exercise, especially if it is due to circumstances that are out of your control. If you have to work late and miss your aerobics class, try not to dwell on this. Rather make a concerted effort to go the next day or attend the next class, as a habit is not supposed to feel like too much effort.

Find a workout buddy

Going to gym with a friend or family member, or going for a jog with your partner can work wonders for your exercise enjoyment level. This is because your workout buddy can help to keep you accountable and they can motivate you to push yourself and meet new challenges.

Another great reason to find a workout buddy is so that you will not feel alone when at the gym or if you are cycling through the park for your evening workout. Many people feel uncomfortable when exercising alone, which is why they find excuses not to. If you have a workout buddy, you will have company during your workout and you will likely feel bad for cancelling your workout, keeping you from skipping too many sweat sessions.

Set goals

The goals that you set should go beyond losing weight and gaining muscles. You should set fitness goals, such as beating your current limit, pushing yourself past your current running time or doing more push-ups and sit-ups in your next session.

Setting goals can help to make you excited to go to gym because you have a true reason for going. Fitness goals can make exercising feel like a game where you are pushing yourself to get to the next level. Try not to pressure yourself to reach these goals in an unrealistic time period, or you could feel discouraged. Rather take it one step at a time, such as increasing your weights every time you lift or setting the treadmill one level higher when you run.

Change it up

You do not have to stick to one workout regime for the rest of time. You can (and should) change it up in order to make exercise more enjoyable. If you enjoy being outdoors, look for bike parts online and set up a mountain bike ride, or if you are someone who enjoys injecting fun into their workout, swap bootcamp for Zumba.

If you assume that exercise needs to consist of lifting weights or jogging, you are limiting yourself and missing out on exciting opportunities. Ask your gym if they have any classes that you might enjoy taking part in. You might find a class that you particularly enjoy, one which makes exercising fun and easier to take part in.

Magical music

This might seem like an obvious tip, but listening to music while you exercise can make it ten times more enjoyable. Make a playlist of your favourite songs and turn the volume up while you are exercising, and you will feel your mood being lifted and your enthusiasm increasing.

Many gyms do play music, but it might not all be to your liking, which is why you should bring along your own MP3 player and headphones. Be sure that your playlist has inspiring songs on it, and that you do not spend your time flicking through your music rather than exercising. Set up unique playlists for your different workouts, as this will make your exercise session fun and exciting.

Stop making excuses

The number one way to stop yourself from enjoying exercise is by making excuses. If you make exercise a habit, you will not be able to make excuses not to go. And if you have a gym buddy by your side, they will encourage you to push yourself to a higher level. Setting goals and trying out new things will also make exercising more enjoyable. So, put on your gym shoes, turn up the music and start sweating with these top tips.
